There are some 50 Serre Chevalier Hotels of all sizes offering excellent food and lodging to visitors to Serre Chevalier, most are situated at one of the four main points of lift entry to the ski area, although there are quieter places along the valley in the smaller, outlying villages for those who wish and there are hotels situated on the very pistes themselves for those who don’t want to miss a minute on the slopes.

It is possible to walk to the ski lifts from most places in Briançon, Villeneuve, Chantemerle or Monêtier, although there is an excellent, free shuttle-bus service during the day, but for those who choose a place off the main path private transport is advised and there is ample parking at all ski lifts.

Most Serre Chevalier hotels are in the middle range, there is currently only one four star hotel in the valley, although a new complex for Monêtier is set for completion in the next few years.

Serre Chevalier is a real community that has grown over the years and most hotels have grown with the area – even before the idea of a skiing holiday – and as such offer a friendly, family operated service, that has retained the charm of an older time. The mountain fare and excellent kitchens makes a visit to many of the valley’s hotel restaurants a worthwhile journey regardless of where you choose to stay.

Given the relative lateness of the ski station developing there are very few of the concrete monsters thrown up in the 1970s, meaning it is one of the most civilised and unhurried places to stay in the Alps, if not the world.

Located in the Southeast  of France, Puy Saint Vincent has rugged scenery with mountains peaking at over 4,000 meters. Within the narrow valley setting lies this dream like ski resort, offering 75 kilometers of runs within 1350 vertical meters of terrain. It is a mix of runs which create a fun and encouraging playground for beginners to intermediate skiers, about 75 percent of the marked terrain consists of intermediary wide slopes, enjoyable for all.

Away from the bustle of large-resort mentality, pistes remain well groomed and offer a more clear and free atmosphere. Whether it is gliding through wide forest glades or dominating a slope in complete solitude, Puy Saint Vincent is an ideal getaway for skiers among a beautiful scenic view. Advanced levels will enjoy the tree runs and hidden chutes, as well as a snowpark and halfpipe that remain lit through the evening for freeskiers who are daredevils by night. Night skiing is also available throughout the winter, as a few slopes become illuminated by large floodlights.

A particular plus at Puy Saint Vincent is its seemingly endless stints of fresh runs – untouched powder is a common find for those tired of looking for secret untracked spots at busy mountains. Backcountry ski tours and snowmobile tours are available for experts looking for the ultimate Hautes Alpes terrain.

Perhaps it’s the overwhelming beauty of nature and preserved environment that Puy Saint Vincent is most notable for. Les Ecrins National Park is home to a variety of cherished wildlife, from golden eagle and owls to over 200 types of endangered flora and fauna, creating a breathtaking environment for a number of outdoor winter activities. Over 75 kilometers of cross-country skiing is offered for nordic enthusiasts, as well as snowmobiling trails, snow shoeing areas, dog sledding paths and places for ice climbing.

Turin ski resorts are all about 80-120km west of Turin. You can get to famous ski resorts within an hour of landing at the airport and there are more resorts as you move further away from the airport.

There is the valle di Susa which is just forty five minutes from the airport. You can ski to your heart’s content at this place and also do some sight seeing on the side. There’s plenty to see along the slopes and there’s also a guided tour if you are interested. The nightlife around here is excellent.

Located about an hour’s journey from the airport is the Sauze d’Ouix region. You will be skiing in the famous Vialattea region of Italy. It usually has great snow and is also part of the Milky Way stretch of the Vialattea. There’s over four hundred kilometres of slopes to ski on meaning you will never run out of space. Sauze d’Ouix is a quaint and traditional village that makes for the perfect place to get you started on your ski trip.

There is also San Sicario, which gives you a full reign over the Milky Way stretch. The Milky Way covers one hundred and forty five runs which ensures that you have great variety to choose from. The resort offers great deals to snowboarders and skiers.

Sestriere is another place where you can get in some great skiing action. It sits in between a high up purpose-built Alpine village. This has over four hundred kilometres of pistes for snowboarding and skiing and is a great place for intermediate skiers and snowboarders. There are also areas where advanced skiers can go to for more challenging slopes. This resort is situated about one hundred kilometers from Turin International airport. It was the place where the 2006 winter Olympics were held.

Another great resort is Claviere, which has over three hundred and seventy pistes. It is located near the French border and has a peaceful traditional Alpine village setting. It is connected to the neighboring Montgenèvre in France and has beautiful slopes to ski on. It offers easy access to both Turin International Airport and the Geneva Airport. It is chosen by most for its easy to reach location and the fantastic skiing experience it provides.

The easiest way to get to the Turin ski resorts mentioned above is by a minibus transfer from The Alpine Transfer Company.

Transfers from Turin to Serre Chevalier are provided by The Alpine Transfer Company. The cheapest price for a scheduled transfer is 45€ per person. This is far better than messing about with the Sadem bus to Porto Novo station from the airport and then getting the train to Oulx (probably changing at Bussoleno) and then getting the bus to Briancon.

Serre Chevalier is spread out between the town of Briançon and Le Monêtier les Bains so the chances are you are going to be needed to dropped off at your door with all your luggage and maybe skis or snowboards too.  It’s true that the SkiBus/Navette runs up and down the valley when the lifts are running, but why make it difficult for yourself?  The Alpine Transfer Company’s transfers from Turin to Serre Chevalier are totally inclusive, so if you are bringing skis, snowboards or loads of luggage, it really is not a problem.

A Turin to Puy St Vincent transfer service is offered by The Alpine Transfer Company and will take you to Puy St Vincent in a safe and comfortable way. Turin to Puy St Vincent is about a 136km journey, which involves driving over the Col du Montgenèvre. The Col du Montgenèvre is a lovely mountain pass to drive over in good weather, but can be quite scary in snow. It is also prone to very thick fog.

Although many websites will tell you that it is possible to get from Turin to Sauze d’Oulx using public transport in just over two hours they are referring to the actual journey time and do not take into account any waiting time.

In reality there is a bus from the airport to the station in Turin; then there is a train from Turin to Oulx (some are direct, some involve changes at Bussoleno); then another bus from Oulx to Sauze. You will need to buy three tickets in three different ticket offices, each may involve a queue. You will also need to be able to explain where you want to go, which may not be too easy if your Italian is not up to scratch.

Then you would need the bus to leave the airport at the exact time that you are ready and to arrive at Turin station at the right time for the train to depart the moment you board it. Then of course the bus waiting at Oulx station needs to be ready to leave as soon as the train arrives. Does that public transport solution from Turin to Sauze d’Oulx sound a bit of a pain? You bet, it’s not really the way to begin your holiday is it?

If you weren’t arriving at Turin, there is also a train, which takes only 4½ hours from Paris to Oulx, the village just below Sauze. For those who prefer self-drive ski breaks, Sauze d’Oulx is between 8 and 10 hours from Calais and there is motorway all the way.

Sauze d’Oulx is an ideal departure point for the Milky Way, which is one of the world’s largest skiing areas. There are over 400 kms of pistes of which 110 kms have artificial snowmaking facilities (over 1000 snow cannons). With 88 ski lifts, skiers of all standards have the choice of fast, wide pistes or gentler picturesque routes through the fir and larch woods.

A much more peaceful and relaxed way to do the journey is with a Turin Sauze d’Oulx transfer from The Alpine Transfer Company, just fill in the form with your trip details to get sorted.

Oulx Serre Chevalier transfers are available from The Alpine Transfer Company. This is a fairly short journey of about 40km and should take about 50 minutes if the weather is good.

Oulx is situated on the mainline railway that runs between Paris, Turin and Milan and represents a popular gateway to the Italian ski-resorts of the Via Latte, as well as the French resorts of Serre Chevalier, Briançon and Montgenèvre. Although a bus service runs between Oulx, Montgenèvre and Briançon, places are limited and you are advised to book at least 48 hours in advance. The other problem with using public transport is that your final destination will be Briancon Railway Station and unless you are staying at that end of Briancon, you may still have a way to go. So really it’s not quite the solution for an Oulx Serre Chevalier transfer.

The Alpine Transfer Company are on hand to pick you up from Oulx train Station and transfer you directly to your alpine accommodation. The Alpine Transfer Company provide Oulx transfers to Montgenèvre, Briancon & Serre Chevalier. If you are traveling via either Milan or Turin Airport, we do however strongly recommend that you take a direct transfer, as it will save you time and almost certainly, money.

Since I have lived in Serre Chevalier I have noticed more people arriving internationally from places like the US, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. It seems that many of the long haul destinations are served by Paris Airports which is still a long long way from Serre Chevalier, so it makes sense to get the TGV train from Paris which only takes about four an half hours to get to Oulx. With the Alpine Transfer Company you can then do the final Oulx Serre Chevalier part of the journey in under an hour.

Turin Montgenèvre transfers are available from The Alpine Transfer Company for just 35€/per person on their scheduled service.  Of course we would prefer you came to Serre Chevalier instead for 45€, but if Montgenèvre is for you that is fine. The Alpine Transfer Company’s bus does it’s regular journey’s on Saturday and can also pick up and drop off from Sauze d’Oulx or Oulx Railway Station if required. Turin to Montgenèvre is 109km, which is mostly motorway, finishing with a spectacular mountain climb from Cesana up to Montgenèvre itself.

So what are the alternatives? Well, the nearest train station to Montgenèvre is in located 12km away in nearby Briancon, from where it is possible to travel to the nearby Montgenèvre airports of Grenoble and Marseille as well as Paris.

The second closest station is located approximately 19km away in Oulx, from where you can catch trains to Turin, Milan and Paris. The Alpine Transfer Company are pleased to offer an Oulx transfer service.

You could also do the Turin Montgenèvre journey by hiring a car at Turin Airport and then driving to the resort . If you do decide to do this, do think how much you will actually use the car once you are in the resort.  Montgenèvre is well established ski resort with supermarkets, pubs, nightclubs all right on your doorstep. Also if the weather is bad on the days you decided to drive to the airport the journey can become very non trivial.  I’ve got stuck on the Col du Montgenèvre quite a few times and fiddling about with snow chains in a blizzard is no fun at all.
